China to Announce Name of First Mars Rover on Space Day of China
China will unveil the name of its first Mars rover on April 24, during the country's Space Day, according to the China National Space Administration (CNSA).
The main celebrations will be held in Nanjing, the capital of east China’s Jiangsu Province, featuring events such as:
· The opening ceremony,
· Bilateral talks on the International Lunar Research Station,
· The Fourth China Space Conference.
The name of the Mars rover will be revealed during the opening ceremony, CNSA official Lyu Bo announced at a press conference on Monday.
China launched the Tianwen-1 spacecraft on July 23, 2020. It consists of an orbiter, a lander, and a rover, and successfully entered Mars’ parking orbit after an orbital maneuver on February 24, 2021.
The global naming campaign for the rover started in July 2020, and netizens worldwide voted on 10 shortlisted names from January 20 to February 28. Last month, three finalists were selected, with “Zhurong”, the fire god in ancient Chinese mythology, emerging as the top choice.
April 24 was designated as China's Space Day in 2016 to commemorate the launch of the country’s first satellite, Dongfanghong-1, on April 24, 1970. The annual event showcases China’s advancements in aerospace and fosters public interest in space exploration.
This year, approximately 300 activities will take place across the country, including:
· Visits to space pavilions, facilities, labs, and workshops,
· Speeches on space science by academicians and experts in schools,
· Exhibits featuring lunar samples, the Chang’e-5 return capsule, and its parachute in Nanjing.
China’s Beidou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) has played a pivotal role in transportation and communication.
· Around 1,400 public service boats and ships (75% of the total) are equipped with the BDS.
· Approximately 300 general aircraft (11% of the total) have also adopted the system.
The BDS-3 system, officially commissioned on July 31, 2020, offers global users:
· Positioning, navigation, and timing services,
· Value-added services such as global search and rescue, short message communication, satellite augmentation, and precise point positioning.
The Space Day of China continues to inspire curiosity and highlight the nation’s achievements in space exploration, showcasing China’s growing role in the global aerospace arena.
