El viernes 2 de febrero de 2018, en las instalaciones de la Dirección General de Medio Ambiente de la Junta de Extremadura, se convocó una reunión técnica entre los socios del Proyecto LIFE ZEPAURBAN, DGMA y Terra Naturalis, con la empresa Microsensory SL. Esta empresa ha sido adjudicataria en el concurso de contratación para el suministro de emisores GPS y satélite para llevar a cabo el seguimiento de más de 50 ejemplares de cernícalo primilla durante los próximos años.
Siguiendo las directrices de los técnicos del proyecto LIFE ZEPAURBAN, Microsensory SL ha desarrollado unos emisores GPS diseñados específicamente para el cernícalo primilla, en los que se ha tenido en cuenta la peculiar biología de la especie y su carácter migratorio. Los emisores pueden configurarse individualmente de manera remota, optimizando al máximo la recogida de datos y la duración de la batería.
Inicialmente el proyecto LIFE ZEPAURBAN contemplaba la colocación de emisores basados en una tecnología que requería la recaptura de todos los individuos para poder obtener los datos almacenados. No obstante, en las primeras reuniones técnicas se acordó con Microsensory SL la necesidad de desarrollar un sistema de recogida de datos a distancia que evitase tener que recapturar a las aves. Así, Microsensory SL ha desarrollado una nueva tecnología en los emisores que permite obtener fácilmente los datos utilizando una antena de mano, un antena con una base receptora o incluso vía web. Finalmente se ha optado por utilizar una antena de descarga con una base receptora que almacenará automáticamente los datos de todos los cernícalos primilla de cada colonia.
Se realizaron diversas pruebas de campo para verificar la capacidad de de los emisores GPS y se probaron diferentes tipos de antenas receptoras. También se ensayaron con notable éxito diversas situaciones limitantes para la recepción de datos similares a las se producirán en las zonas urbanas donde habita el cernícalo primilla, como la existencia de barreras físicas (edificios) o posibles interferencias (antenas, tendidos de alta tensión). Se consiguieron extraordinarios valores de recepción de datos, incluso a distancias superiores a 1000 m entre emisor y receptor.
En los próximos días comenzará la fabricación en serie de estos emisores en el centro de producción de la empresa y a principios de marzo se dispondrá de todos los equipos, momento en el que se planificará la colocación de los emisores en las colonias elegidas para desarrollar esta acción.
