n About Aphelion Orbitals
Aphelion Orbitals was founded with the vision of making open space access a reality. Just a few decades ago, only the world’s largest superpowers had the capability to launch into orbit. Today, private space ventures and evolving industry demands are giving rise to a new generation of space pioneers.
While the cost per kilogram for launch continues to decrease, manifesting a launch remains an unattainable goal for many companies, even the largest ones. However, the burgeoning nanosatellite sector is unlocking exciting new possibilities. Small businesses and academic institutions now have access to dedicated launch opportunities that were once out of reach.
n The Challenge in the Launch Industry
Much like early computers, which were limited to institutions with vast resources, rockets face similar barriers. Although technology has advanced, the availability of affordable orbital launch vehicles has not kept pace.
While there are low-cost, responsive small launch vehicles available, they often come with price tags upwards of $3 million and operate on timelines that are incompatible with the fast-paced commercial world. Designed with conservative approaches based on an industry accustomed to high launch costs, these vehicles have not significantly altered the supply chain or reduced costs. They are not competitive with larger players in terms of cost per kilogram and lack the flexibility needed to make nanosatellites more accessible.
n Our Business Model and Vision
Our business model integrates market creation, mass production, and innovation, allowing us to drive down the cost of space resource utilization. Despite rockets being no more complex than automobiles, public access to space remains limited due to high manufacturing costs, low production volumes, and a complex supply chain.
Aphelion Orbitals aims to bridge this gap by addressing these challenges — and our first launch vehicle is just the beginning.
n Our Location and Team
We are based in Union City, New Jersey, just 15 minutes from midtown Manhattan. Our dedicated engineering team is hard at work, focused on our first flight, which is scheduled for 2018.
